A primeira temporada se passa no fictício Camp Singleton (destinado a representar Camp Pendleton), onde o major do Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais dos Estados Unidos John D. "Mac" MacGillis é comandante da escola de treinamento de infantaria. A vida de MacGillis muda quando ele se apaixona por uma jornalista liberal, Polly Cooper.r
No início da segunda temporada, a família MacGillis se muda para Camp Hollister (baseado no Quantico Base do Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais), onde Mac deve se adaptar ao papel de Secretário de Pessoal (ou, "Staff Weenie") e as travessuras malucas do Comandante General Marcus C. Craig, Assessor-de-Camp 1º Tenente Eugene Holowachuk, e o Sargento Alva "Gunny" Bricker.
