A série de comédia mais longa do mundo começou, como muitos sucessos da comédia britânica fizeram, com um episódio de 1973 da série da BBC "Comedy Playhouse". A base era simples, mas complexa ao mesmo tempo. Conta-nos as histórias de três velhos, que em toda a essência não poderiam ser mais jovens de coração.r
O trio original consistia em Bill Owen, como Compo Simmonite, o homem mais desajeitado de Yorkshire, com apenas duas paixões na vida: seus furões e Nora Batty (Kathy Staff).r
O segundo homem do grupo, Norman Clegg, interpretado por Peter Sallis, foi desde o início mostrado como o mais tímido do grupo, e também aquele que se deixa levado pelas ideias e esquemas loucos de seus companheiros, que sempre parecem colocá-lo em apuros.r
Inicialmente, o terceiro homem do grupo era Blamire, interpretado por Michael Bates, mas logo foi substituído por Foggy Dewhurst (Brian Wilde), que sempre parece ter um esquema ou uma história que de alguma forma leva aos seus velhos tempos como um herói
