O show girava em torno de "Big" John Cannon (Leif Erickson), um fazendeiro que viveu no Território do Arizona na década de 1870. Ele dirigia o rancho com seu irmão Buck (Cameron Mitchell) e seu filho Billy Blue (Blue Boy) (Mark Slade). A mãe de Blue Boy, Annalee (Joan Caulfield), foi morta no primeiro episódio por uma flecha indiana, e John Cannon então se casou com Victoria (Linda Cristal), filha do poderoso fazendeiro vizinho Don Sebastián Montoya, no que é inicialmente um casamento de Conveniência. Seu casamento com Victoria Montoya trouxe seu irmão Manolito (Henry Darrow) para a foto, e ele também veio morar com a família. Cameron Mitchell tinha sido oferecido a parte de Buck após um voo de companhia aérea para Tucson onde ele tinha se sentou ao lado do criador da série e sua esposa.
